Zombie
movies are banned in China. In fact, the Ministry
of Civil Affairs bans all horror films dealing with FEUDALISTIC IDEOLOGY
OR PSEUDOSCIENCE, specifically "Spirit possession, reincarnation,
witchcraft, zombies, etc., including excessive horror, psychological pain,
hysteria, causing strong stimulation to senses and emotions."
So how did this graphic zombie movie get produced in China by a Beijing
studio? Well, it seems the film skipped over the Chinese censorship board
by never mentioning the word 'zombie' or 'living dead.'
In fact, there's no backstory nor any mention of where these contaminated
people came from. These contaminated creatures just appear one day, hungry
for flesh, infecting anyone who gets bitten.
The
movie has now won 175 Best Picture and Best Performance awards in film
festivals around the world, including Best Horror movie at the 2018 Los
Angeles Film Awards, the Best Horror Feature Award at the 2018 Calcutta
International Cult Film Festival, numerous Best Director awards for Sky
Wang, and the Best Actress win for Zhang E'Naan at the Hollywood International
Film Festival. The rather simple story deals with a group of people who
gather at a swank hotel to celebrate the birthday of a company's boss.
Chaos erupts almost immediately as infected 'zombies' begin attacking
everywhere. Six people manage to escape virus-infested hotel, only to
find themselves in even worse trouble when they try to take refuge in
an old military station.
