This
film is loosely based on the Indonesian legend of Dewi Angin Angin.
The Javanese people see her as the legendary princess of Pakuan Pajajaran
Kingdom. She is banished from her home after getting caught having sex
with a boyfriend ("Scriptures must be obeyed. You have violated
tradition by doing the most sacred before marriage"). She throws
herself into the South Sea, begging forgiveness from the supreme gods,
and - in return - she incarnates as a beautiful supernatural queen.
Dewi Angin Angin [originally, Nyi Roro Kidul] is known as a beautiful,
cruel, sexually liberated woman in Indonesian folklore.
Over
the years, this Queen of the South Seas has been the subject of many
books and movies. She is usually portrayed as a powerful anti-humanity
force (i.e., H. Tjut Djalil's LADY
TERMINATOR, 1989). In this film, however,
her motivation is much more ambiguous, while - sometimes - cryptic.
But, after cutting away the rather cumbersome fabled rhetoric, here
is the story of heroic Dewi Angin Angin challenging three deviant martial-arts
warriors who are using black magic to take control of the territory
governed by her secret lover, Emperor Ketumenggungan.
