Many
International critics have called this "the
Korean version of Kids." But frankly, it deals less with adolescence
and more with a (very) dark side of Korean society. This is a mondo
style movie. It supposedly is directed/filmed by kids who don't want
to be identified. In fact, the credits list everybody - from actors
to editors - as "Unresolved." Nobody wants to take responsibility
because "this is a Bad Movie." It is technically
bad. And the subject matter is bad. It's called "Tasteless and
evil?" Possibly true. But it also very realistic. Some might
say, it is revolutionary cinema. But prepare to walk away feeling disgusted
by everything.
Here
is a compilation of episodes by (and about) 'bad teenagers' and
the Seoul homeless, shedding a pinlight on the dark side of Korean society.
These kids are alienated and persecuted, doing everything possible to
resist the 'good people who try to help them.' These kids cannot change,
they cannot 'improve.' Why not? Simply, because they are bad.
Since
makin this movie, Korean filmmaker Jang Sun-woo has directed two classics
of Asian genre cinema, RESURRECTION
OF THE LITTLE MATCH GIRL and LIES.
Jang has since retired to Jeju Island where he spent the past two decades
working on a film dealing with the oral transmission of early Buddhist
sutras. As of 2024, he is 74 years old.
