"THIS NOTORIOUS
LOST FILM IS WONDERFULLY STRANGE!
SIMILAR TO 'THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW' EXCEPT IT CAME FIRST!"
--Andy Giese
original Danish title ADOLF HITLER SUPERSTAR
director: Ernst Bruun Olsen
starring: Buster Larsen · Lisa Ringheim · Alllan Mortensen ·
Elizabeth Norager · Birte Tove
A young
hippie couple discovers Adolf Hitler survived the Second World War and
is now living unscathed with his mistress / wife Eva Braun in Denmark.
Meanwhile, a right-winged promotion director concocts a plan to transform
the Führer into a Global Superstar.
Ernst
Bruun Olsen's counter-culture musical was originally produced for Danish
television, but then distributed to the European theater circuit in
1974. It met harsh criticism due to the unconventional plot. The dialogue
- in both narrative and songs - is smart, offensive, very contemporary
and broadly humorous [perhaps inspired by the Mel Brooks' 'Springtime
for Hitler' segment of The Producers (1967)].
Whereas
the first 15 minutes follow a rather traditional format, the film dramatically
shifts gears when Birte Tove (from SWEDISH
FLY GIRLS) shows up as a sexy Nazi robot named Paula and Preben
Guldløwe sings his 'Superstar' to the tune of
the Beatle's Yesterday. Buckle up. This movie is heading
into uncharted territory which includes Hitler's demented recreation
of the Last Supper.
