Mermaids kidnap Chen Shui's bride on their wedding night. Seemingly, the abduction has something to do a traditional marriage gift of a pearl necklace [which had been created from tears of mermaids]. The forlorn Chen sets sail for a small island in the South China Sea where the mermaids live.

Even though the English title identifies the creatures here as 'mermaids,' the original Mandarin/Chinese title calls them 'Jiaoren,' mythical creatures from folklore which were a fusion of shark and gillmen. Yes, as seen from the pictures on this page, these mermaids are both female and male.
