A strange
UFO appears in the skies over the Philippines and then, shortly afterwards,
a village is attacked by giants, leaving hundreds of people dead [mostly
squashed] or wounded. As if that weren't enough, strange humanoids with
ray guns prowl about and capture villagers. Fortunately for everybody
- including the rest of the world - there is a local superhero known
as Darna to the rescue.
A lot
of conventional as-well-as unconventional moments fill this 106 minute
Filipino extravaganza, from smack-n-pop fight scenes to jarring musical
numbers. But interestingly - despite moments of forced comic relief
sprinkled through the movie - there is nothing tongue-in-cheek or humorous
about the horrific giant attacks. People are mercilessly smashed and
many die. In fact, the first death in the movie is that of a child.
Vilma
Santos (arguably the most popular Darna, playing the role for almost
a decade) would follow this film with DARNA
AND THE PLANET WOMEN and DARNA
AND DING. After retiring from the Darna series, Vilma Santos
and her career continued to explode. She would appear in over 200 movies
and become the most awarded actress in Filipino cinema history. Later,
she married a high-ranking politician and Ms Santos is now Mayor of
Lupo City.
