original
Japanese title AISHU CINDERELLA [Morbid Cinderella]
also known as MELANCHOLY
director Ryōhei Watanabe
starring Coco · Ryo Ishibashi · Miho Kanazawa ·
Yuki Mamiya · Kenta Matsushima · Tsuchiya Tao
Koharu
has a happy life. She holds a public sector job where she is respected
and successful. But then Koharu is touched by personal devastation.
Her man suddenly 'changes' into a shameful womanizer, embarrassingly
lusting after other women including co-workers. A new boyfriend enters
Koharu's life and seemingly puts everything back on track. They marry.
But the result is no Cinderella story.
At
the risk of divulging the shocking direction of Watanabe's film, let
it suffice to say this is, perhaps, the most controversial movie of
the year. One Japanese critic wrote: "The first half portrays a
cheerful young woman moving on from her disruptive past. But, abruptly,
the second half becomes an unparalleled psychotic cinematic experience."
Yet another critic wrote: [spoiler ahead]
"Big budget. Big stars. Big disaster. A romantic comedy about a
benevolent heroine who turns psycho and murders students of an entire
elementary school!?"
