This
is a gruesome horror film lingering in a netherworld of Japanese folklore
as if interpreted by Herschel Gordon Lewis [with specific nods to 2000
MANIACS]. It's officially based on a popular on-line manga by Makine
Muroi, promotion claims "the #1 title selling more than 200,000
units." Undeniably, this is trashy entertainment - constantly
shifting between blatant misogyny and a feigned altruism - ultimately
culminating in an unprovoked [and unnecessary] bloodbath. The film opens
as a young woman is chased through the woods by three men. They soon catch
her, tear open the top of her garment exposing breasts before chopping
off her leg with an ax. Somehow, this event has led to 50 years without
the single birth of a woman in the small isolated village. No. It's not
explained. Nor is there any explanation for the disappearance of other
women who happened to be living in the community at the time. And if there
are no women, wouldn't it also stand to reason that BOTH
women and men have not been born in 50 years? Yet, boys are clearly running
amuck in the village.
Regardless, a group
of four female college students and their male professor have now arrived
in this isolated place to study folklore. They are grandly welcomed when
Mayor Amano conducts a special ceremony for them. The story twists and
turns through an unsettling sex scene between Professor Ashihara and one
of his buxom students, numerous dream sequences and - ultimately - a realization
the townsfolk are more interested in eating the visitors than sharing
community secrets.
