This
is the story of a perverted killer Yong Jing, a man with control fantasies.
As played by Pan Dong [host of a popular music variety TV series, Sheng Ru Ren Xin (Direct Into People's Hearts)], here is a
lonely boy who - with the loss of his parents - has no family and no friends.
Of course, he also has no lover and nor prospects. One night, while cruising
the boulevard, he gives a ride to a very drunk hooker from a local club.
The encounter results in the girl's accidental death (she mocks him for
his impotency) causing Yong Jing to abduct more and more victims. Everything
culminates when he meets Zi Qi, a sympathetic blind girl...
Kudos
must be given to director Chen Run and producer Xue Shao for even attempting
to make this kind of film in China today. The Ministry of Civil Affairs
controls distribution and censorship of all creative works (including
performance, film, written word). Among other things, the Beijing government
does not permit "excessive horror, psychological pain, hysteria,
causing strong stimulation to senses and emotions with uncomfortable pictures,
lines, music, and sound effects." This movie tries to skirt the issue,
but essentially the result is DR
LAMB-lite. The cannibalism is played down considerably [the story
is based on a Chinese true-crime event], and - instead - Yong Jing suffers
from abandonment issues and essentially commits the murders to then turn
his victims into dolls that he can control and manipulate.
