State-of-the-arts TX, spirited direction from Keita Amamiya (SCARY
WOMEN, GARO
and various Kamen Rider episodes), and a deadly serious
performance from Yuko Moriyama put these two movies in a class by themselves
(regardless of the obvious comparisons with Star Wars, Alien,
et al). Based on an adult gekiga, this is SciFi for the
manga crowd where the story flows more like a video game than a Frank
Herbert novel.
A
chic female bounty hunter sets a trap for an evil alien called Zeiram.
She is aided by two inept power company agents and a high-tech computer
named 'Bob.' In the first film, bounty hunter Ilya [from another planet]
comes to Earth to capture an escaped alien monster. She and her computer
create an alternate dimension where she can hunt, fight and capture Zeiram
without putting too many people at risk.
The sequel
is just as entertaining as the first movie and the story contains many
of the same elements [including the alternate universe]. But it's also
a better film with more character development, especially for bounty hunter
Ilya. This time she's on an Earthbound artifact recovery mission when
a new, more powerful Zeiram shows up to cause chaos.
