original Italian title UN DOLLARO A TESTA
[A Dollar A Head]
director: Sergio Corbucci
starring: Burt Reynolds · Nicoletta Machiavelli · Aldo Sanbrell · Fernando
Rey · Tanya Lopert
Navajo
Joe is the lone survivor of a massacre inflicted on his Indian tribe by
a gang of outlaws. He vows vengeance. Joe tricks the racist townspeople
of Esperanza into paying him one dollar for every scalp he takes from
the heads of a threatening gang. It's the same group of killers who destroyed
his village and murdered his family, so he's getting paid to eliminate
an enemy that he would have killed for free.
Highlights
include the memorable [yet outlandish] musical score by Ennio Morricone
(under the odd alias Leo Nichols) and beautiful raven-haired Nicoletta
Machiavelli (from GARTER
COLT and MATCHLESS)
as the half-breed Estella who takes a liking to Joe. Of course, this is
also the only Spaghetti Western made by Burt Reynolds. It's also his motion
picture debut. After 8 years of television work [including 50 episodes
playing an Indian named Quint on Gunsmoke], Italian producer
Dino De Laurentiis personally convinced him to leave Hollywood and make
this film. Afterwards, Burt promptly returned to the states for another
TV series where he played half-breed Detective Lt. John Hawk in Hawk.
