Fantaghirò
is one of the King's three daughters. Unlike her sisters, she is wild
and fearless. Her father is embarrassed by her and wishes Fantaghirò
would learn to be more ladylike. Meanwhile, the White Witch secretly
teaches Fantaghirò how to fight like a man with the sword and
bow. War has been raging between two kingdoms for centuries. But when
the King's enemy dies, there appears to finally be a chance at peace.
The dead ruler's son, Romulado, hopes to put an end to the war between
the two kingdoms. He suggests a duel between the two strongest knights
from each realm. The White Witch prophesies that "only a family
member can save the kingdom" and convinces him to disguise Fantaghirò
as a man and put her in the duel against Prince Romulado. But, during
the fight, he discovers she is a woman and promptly falls in love
with her. Although she wins the duel, Fantaghirò will not kill
him because she has fallen in love, too. Her refusal forfeits the
win and dishonors the Prince (and his kingdom) at the same time.
For the second
movie, Fantaghirò and Prince Romualdo are preparing their marriage.
But when the evil Black Queen - disgusted by their love - captures
the King, Romualdo and his soldiers go off to free him. The insidious
and powerful Black Queen transforms herself into Fantaghirò
and turns Romualdo into her slave by kissing him, thus capturing the
rest of his army. Meanwhile, Fantaghirò has followed Romualdo
and his men through the Dark Forest to the Black Queen's castle. She
suddenly finds herself in a deadly fight for survival against her
fiancee who has forgotten her as the result of the Black Queen's magic.
