A cop
is found dead in his car, next to him is a stash of drugs. The police
set up a special investigation unit - including veteran detective Kim
Seong-beam, a friend of the dead man - to dig into the murder. Also
part of the team is young Kim Ho-ryong, an officer trained at the FBI
in America, and a female informant played by Jo Jae-Yoon. The older
Kim Seong-beam attacks the case traditionally while the young partner
uses facts and analysis to conduct his investigation. Despite an obvious
internal conflict, the two follow their leads and discover everything
points back to the special unit.
Director
Hwang Byung-guk was obviously inspired by Curtis Hanson's LA Confidential
for this film. The similarities are numerous. But that doesn't detract
from the overall success of the project. He does create a fascinating
puzzle that twists and turns leading to a devastating conclusion.
