For the most part,
Luigi Russo was a nondescript Italian director. He broke into the business
as a script-writer for various ribald comedies, including DECAMERON II
(1972) for Mino Guerrini and Lucia Dandolo's LUSTY WIVES OF CANTERBURY
(1973). When given the opportunity to helm a project of his own, Mr Russo
concentrated on what he knew best... naughty erotica. But he removed the
humor and inserted large doses of unconventional sex; the result was this
film, LA BELLA E LA BESTIA. It is his masterpiece but the themes of nymphomania,
bestiality and masochism lost major distribution for the motion picture
and kept it from being seen. On the other hand, he is probably best known
for his totally insignificant 'Blue Lagoon' ripoff called BLUE
ISLAND (1982). Mr Russo died in April 2014, after a lengthy illness. He
was 82.
This is a four part
omnibus, each starring Lisbeth Hummel. For the first story, The Slave,
she plays a newly acquired girl in the harem of Tsar Vladimir of Russia.
The king agrees to grant her any wish in exchange for sexual intimacy.
The slave chooses that she be crowned Queen for a single day. Tsar Vladimir
says yes but soon lives to regret that decision. In the next tale, Zoorasia,
a rich nobleman learns his wife has been unfaithful. She is imprisoned
- naked - in the dungeon with only a horse and two large dogs for company.
This leads to sexual abnormalities that drive her insane. The third installment
is called Whipping and here an abused young man discovers the joy
of torture when his beautiful cousin comes to visit. The last story, The
Promise, deals with a girl on her final day and night of freedom before
her wedding. She reminds her cousin that it is his last chance to fulfill
a promise he made to her years ago.
An
Italian film with English subtitles; widescreen format, uncut version
(96 min.), DVD encoded for ALL REGION NTSC WORLD FORMAT, playable on any
American machine. Extras include theatrical trailers.
