Jacques Scandelari's Tale of Sexual Intrigue in the Underworld

Original French title: BRIGADE MONDAINE (Vice Squad)
also known as VICTIMS OF VICE

director: Jacques Scandelari
starring: Patrice Valota · Odile Michel · Florence Cayrol · Patrick Oliver

The crime squad, led by rogue detective Boris Corentin, is assigned to a series of murders involving a drug/prostitution ring. The police investigation leads them to a sado sex club controlled by top level officials. The film opens with a dreamy, erotic sequence - underlined by a drum-oriented disco theme composed by famed music producer Cerrone - wherein a beautiful young woman is blasted by a masked killer with a shotgun. The girl was a prostitute and quickly Detective Corentin is pulled away from his own between-the-sheets action to investigate. As it turns out, there is a drug dealing pimp recruiting girls for some kind of secret encounter orchestrated by a mysterious old man who seems to enjoy sexual abuse more than intercourse. It all escalates into a perverse orgy at an elegant mansion after Detective Corentin's girlfriend is kidnapped.

Director Scandelari made only a handful of motion pictures; he is probably best known for the sado-erotic BEYOND LOVE AND EVIL. In the mid seventies, he left Paris for New York where he helmed a variety of lurid films (including MONIQUE: NEW YORK NIGHTS) and a couple Adult XXX movies under the name Marvin Merkins. He would soon return to France to begin work on this VICE SQUAD production in 1978. It would be his final theatrical endeavor, followed by a hardcore 'Marvin Merkins' gay project called Un Couple Molderne (The Cock Story). Mr Sandelari so hated his hardcore films [he was not an exponent of XXX cinema in general, calling them "obvious, heartless and boring"] that he chose to leave the filmmaking field rather than continue in that genre. Jacques Scandelari died from a heart attack in June 1999 at age 54.
