MURDERLUST
was promoted as a slasher-film upon its release in the mid '80s, but it's
really more of a character study of psychopathic behavior. Seemingly director
Donald Jones and his leading actor Eli Rich were more interested in building
a narrative - albeit, a perverse, twisted narrative - rather than delivering
slasher thrills. The movie works. Yes, it is ugly, mean-spirited and ultimately
tasteless, but it works.
On Sundays,
Steve Belmont volunteers his time as a Sunday School teacher at his local
church. The rest of the week, Steve earns a meager salary as a third-rate
security guard. He also spends his spare time picking up and killing women
- mostly hookers - and dumping their bodies in the Mojave Desert. Much
of the dialogue is purposely offensive and Steve Belmont's misogynist
attitude towards females is appalling. But he can also be charming and
oddly melancholy
