Set in 665AD, twenty-four years before the events of DETECTIVE DEE: MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME, this one begins with an entire fleet of warships destroyed by a giant sea monster. The Empress demands a solution to this "dragon" problem and her advisors suggest that popular courtesan Yin be offered up as a sacrifice. Detective Dee (an Indiana Jones - Sherlock Holmes character) saves the pretty whore and manages to antagonize the police captain in the process. The story soon spins out-of-control involving a marauding reptilian creature, a team of assassins from a neighboring kingdom and - of course - the gigantic sea monster of the title.
