South
America continues to shine as a new breeding ground for exceptional martial
arts films (also see KILTRO,
CHINAGO
and MIRAGEMAN).
This film adds "Capoeira" fighting style to the mix for this
Brazilian variation of blaxploitation martial arts. In 1920s Brazil, black
slaves suffer miserably under the heel of their oppressors. These people
are forbidden any celebration of their roots, including all African cultural
practices like traditional martial arts of Capoeira. When the leader of
a slave rebellion movement is assassinated, his protégé
Besouro takes up the mantle. Through the practice of Capoeira - and the
use of African voodoo - Besouro becomes an untouchable mystic, freedom
fighter, and symbol of revolt.
The star of this movie is Ailton Carmo, a real life Brazilian Capoeira
champion.
