Legendary
actor Ossie Davis plays Luke, a slave from Kentucky who tries to organize
and secure justice on the plantation after being dishonestly sold to
a new tyrannical boss, Col MacKay. But Luke soon realizes there is no
justice on a slave plantation. He does manage to secure the trust of
his owner and finds himself positioned inside the mansion where he learns
to keep his mouth shut and observe. Meanwhile, Mackay continues to mistreat
his slaves and begins a torrid affair with one of them, Cassie, which
results in her pregnancy. After two young slaves are severely punished
and attempting an escape, Luke organizes a massive uprising against
his master.
The
is the first (and last) film from director Herbert J. Biberman after
being blacklisted in Hollywood for 20 years. He was one of the Hollywood
Ten, a group of Studio executives accused of being Communists, forced
to testify before the Congressional House Un-American Activities Committee
in 1950. His refusal to answer the charges warranted a prison sentence
and a resulting Industry blacklist. Mr Biberman died from bone cancer
in June 1971, shortly after the release of this film. He was 71 years
old.
