In the early '70s,
American author Kyle Onstott wrote numerous
exploitation novels about slavery in the Old South. They were wildly popular,
resulting in the production of the big-budgeted MANDINGO
(1975) based on one of those novels. Within the year, Italian director
Mario Pinzauti worked himself into a mega-sleaze frenzy and produced two
exceptionally lurid clones BLACK
EMANUELLE WHITE EMANUELLE: PASSION PLANTATION and this one, the
creatively altered MANDINGA. Here is an excursion into sadism and depravity,
the kind of sensationalism that could never be made today.
Plantation owner Lawrence purchases a woman who happens to be a princess
of the Mandinga tribe. He rapes her and she becomes pregnant with his
child, but dies in childbirth. The baby is taken and raised by other slaves;
Lawrence doesn't care because he now has a new mistress, a white woman
visiting from England. Years later, the master’s son returns from
school abroad, and is quickly seduced by his father’s mistress. He
soon finds and falls madly in love with a preacher's daughter. They marry.
She gets pregnant. And has a black baby! The son kills her for the indiscretion
but then discovers that she hadn't cheated on him at all; rather, she
had been - unknowingly - half-black. The truth, as it's later revealed,
is she was actually dad's offspring (from the Mandinga rape), thus, his
sister. In addition to this convoluted plot, Mario Pinzauti's film is
loaded with an astonishing amount of sadism, nudity, perversion and extreme
Euro trash sleaze.
It must be seen to be believed.
