Lawrence Cook
plays Dan Freeman ("Free Man" pun intended), a token black CIA
operative. Although Dan is trained in all types of espionage, he's relegated
to working in the copying department as a "showcase" of department
integration. As the title suggests, he's placed by the office door so
he's the first person everyone sees. Incensed by his mistreatment and
the racial stereotyping, Dan resigns and returns to his native Chicago
as a social services worker. But secretly he is teaching a streetgang
the tactics of guerilla. ·The film is a faithful adaptation of Sam
Greenlee's controversial novel of the early '70s. It's a haunting look
at what might have (and maybe damned near) happened in the USA during
that turbulent period of racial unrest. "One of the most important
Black Films ever made." Shot on a small budget by TV-vet Ivan Dixon
(best known for helming ROCKFORD FILES and QUINCY), this movie has a powerful
message beyond the obvious. Never underestimate anyone! Not even "the
spook who sat by the door"!
