Jerry Lewis
plays Private Detective Clovis Blaireau. He is hired by Nadège
de Courtaboeuf, the wife of wealthy industrialist Prosper de Courtaboeuf,
to obtain evidence of infidelity against her husband. Clovis manages to
get close to Prosper and becomes his unlikely friend. The two get involved
in one hair-brained adventure after another - eventually landing themselves
in the Middle East - after being targeted by a Mafia gang.
French audiences
always appreciated Jerry Lewis even when the rest of the world was lukewarm
to his brand of slapstick comedy. In 1984, Jerry went to France to make
this motion picture for filmmaker Philippe Clair under the stipulation
that it would never be released in the United States. Besides the usual
Jerry goofishness (which includes some of the racist stuff he stopped
doing in America, like his 'offensive' Chinese stereotype, see bottom
right), there's also an element of sexual humor never found in his Hollywood
movies. In fact, in the early '80s, Jerry Lewis - so outraged with the
abundance of nudity in films - opened a chain of family theaters in the
United States which had a policy of refusing to show any movie with a
nude scene. Interestingly, that policy would have kept this film out of
his own theaters.
