There
are many different edits of this film due to its audacious subject matter.
The original release - even though it was promoted as a "Holiday
Comedy" - failed fit the bill of traditional holiday family fare.
It caused so much trouble at the Italian boxoffice in December 1998
that the studio pulled it from circulation after only three days. A
more politically correct version - missing the truly dark moments as
well as the nudity and sexual themes - was released on January 1, 1999.
But the new homogenized edit lacked the intended wallop and director
Marco Risi (son of director Dino Risi) refused to endorse it. Scriptwriter
Niccolo Ammariti said "This film is supposed to be a dress rehearsal
for the end of the world, but this castrated version is merely a sad,
pitiful whimper." But here, now, is the original, fully uncut 108
minute print (from Greece with English subtitles); however - please
note - it is intended for mature audiences only.
·It's
New Year's Eve at the swank Islands condos. Here is the flabbergasting
story of what's going on inside the walls of this building. The wealthy
socialite Guilia (played by Monica Bellucci) discovers her husband is
having an affair with her best friend and she vows revenge. Meanwhile,
in another apartment, an aging countess's party is crashed by the soccer
team from her gigolo's hometown. Next door, a call girl begins an S&M
session with an attorney but their kinky sexual activity is interrupted
by three gangsters seeking revenge against the lawyer. Across the hall,
a lonely woman downs pills in a suicide attempt. And, just a few doors
down, two young men are lost in a haze of marijuana... but one of them
has some dynamite and plans to use it. As midnight approaches, everyone
at the Islands is brought closer to certain tragedy.
An
Italian production with optional English or Greek subtitles; widescreen
format (16:9), totally uncut original version (109 min.), DVD encoded
for ALL REGION NTSC, playable on any American machine.
