Produced,
written and photographed by legendary cult director Joe D'Amato (under
a variety of pseudonyms, including his familiar Federico Slonisco
cinematographer alias) ), this is an obvious Jaws rip-off
with a few additional surprises. It's a story that begins when four
kids - bonding in an adolescent blood-brother ritual - meet a mysterious
Indian on the beach. The Indian tells them about an ancient monster
that had cursed his tribe (because they were too experienced at fishing
and the gods were afraid they would empty the ocean). These Indians
had used a sacred artifact to stop the creature. He gives that holy
relic to the boys (for future protection). It's a good thing too, because
years later, a monster shark appears and starts chomping on people in
the sleepy seaside community. When one of the four guys (now young men)
get eaten by the shark, the remaining friends are determined to kill
the thing.
Three
fascinating things about this production: first, chunks of this film
were recycled [stolen] by Bruno Mattei for his CRUEL
JAWS a few years later. Second, the casting director is listed
as Paul Werner. That's actually popular grindhouse actor Werner
Pochath (of MOSQUITO
THE RAPIST fame) in one of his last projects; Mr Pochath died
of liver cirrhosis in 1993 at age 54. And, thirdly, cult film queen
(and Joe D'Amato muse) Laura Gemser has an uncredited performance as
the lab assistant.
