Raquel Welch's Only film Not available in the United States

Also known as FEMMINA VIOLENTA and THE BELOVED and RESTLESS

director: George P Cosmatos
starring: Raquel Welch · Richard Johnson · Jack Hawkins
· Flora Robson · Remato Romano Frank Wolff

Raquel Welch made this film with hopes that she would be taken more seriously as an actress. After a string comedies (Myra Breckenridge and the Biggest bundle of Them All) and lightweight thrillers (Flare Up and Lady in Cement), she was unable to shake the sexpot image that had followed her since 1966's One Million Years BC. She went to Greece (along with a team other British actors) to make this controversial drama. But the problem was - while she succeeded in making something VERY different from the rest of her films - it was too different, alienating the American producers in the process. This film never saw a theatrical release in the USA. It remains her only movie remains unavailable in the United States.

Here is the story of illicit love, jealousy, rape and eventually murder. It was shot in Greek Cyprus and features four British actors (playing Greek characters), a few Italian performers and Cypriots in lessor supporting roles. The story follows Orestes (played by Johnson), a brutish man who returns to his village after 15 years in the UK. Orestes has come home because he's hoping for a bequest after his father death. A longtime friend invites him to stay at his home and there he spies the friend's wife Elena (Welch). She has been quietly suffering the stale marriage and does not resist Orestes sexual advances. This infidelity leads to a grotesque climax that finds Elena beaten by Orestes, raped by a gang of school kids and later, murder.
