director: Jack Nicholson
starring: William Tepper · Karen Black · Bruce Dern ·
Micahel Margotta · Robert Towne · Mike Warren
In
1971, actor Jack Nicholson directed this film (but didn't star in it)
and - due to the sexual theme and graphic male and female nudity - it
was slapped with an "X" rating which resulted in major distribution
difficulties. This is the story of Hector, a basketball player at a
college in Ohio [obviously fashioned after Kent State], who finds himself
getting pulled in many different directions at once. Hector is in the
middle of a sexual relationship with the wife of a faculty professor.
She is trying to decide whether to continue or break up with him. Meanwhile,
his best friend Gabriel has dropped out of school and it about to be
drafted to serve in Viet Nam.
This
is one of three movies directed by Jack Nicholson. He also made "Goin'
South' (1978) and "Two Jakes' (1990), but starred in both of them
while not appearing in this one. Mr Nicholson has also claimed that
he helmed 1963's "The Terror" which was officially attributed
to Roger Corman. Others (Francis Ford Coppola, Jack Hill, and Monte
Hellman) have also taken credit for directing that film.
