Yukari Oshima with Elaine Lui
original
Hong Kong/Chinese title BOK GEUK CHA LOU [Green Ghost Detective]
director:
Wai Shum
starring: Yukari Oshima · Stanley Fung · Fong Lui · Hoi Mang · Michael
Chan · Elaine Lui
Pop
singer Fong Lui plays a young man who wants to be a Hong Kong police officer
but is too short to qualify. However, Lu doesn't let that stop him. He
goes around impersonating an officer, investigating crimes and busting
criminals. One day, he interrupts a bank robbery (by three men in drag)
and gets shot in the process. Lu dies. When the case is assigned to a
female investigator [played by Oshima], he returns as a ghost to lend
a hand at solving the robbery. Then, inexplicably, the quirky plot gets
sidetracked to a different direction with the entrance of bad-ass diva
Elaine Lui, seemingly an arch-enemy of Yukari Oshima. The two provide
an exhilarating [if not unexpected] finale that has little to do with
the foregoing plot.
Filmmaker
Wai Shum seems to be over-his-head here. He directed only a couple movies
(most notably KICKBOXER'S
TEARS). He was better known as an actor, featured in 80+ films
including STONE
AGE WARRIORS [which, incidentally also starred Elaine Lui] and
various Jackie Chan vehicles.
