Fresh.
Vibrant. Bloody. Sexy. And wildly original. It's the 1988 debut project
for directors Gustavo Cova and Horactio Maldonado (both 24 years old at
the time) and it became one of Argentina's biggest films of that year.
Like
many classic '80s horror films, this one follows the typical setup: here's
a group of young people who inexplicably find themselves isolated and
trapped, trying - but failing - to survive a horrific threat. But in this
case, the kids are fighting impossible odds. They are fighting against
themselves and their own personal horrors. These kids are stuck inside
a dream where absolutely anything is possible. Here is a battleground
where nothing has to make sense. Simply they must survive. Survive to
continue. And continue to meet the next impossible challenge. It's like
being trapped inside a video game (long before video games were vogue).
These
kids have volunteered to participate in an unorthodox experiment run by
three American scientists at Argentina's Corman Institute. The experiment
involves a 'maximum stimulation' drug called CP1, plus dreams and computers
which link the kids' brain impulses together. As a result, all five young
people are 'participating' in the resulting nightmare which - because
of the induced state of coma - they cannot be prematurely revived without
risking death. As the movie unspools, the viewer begins to realize this
experiment isn't ABOUT to happen... it has already
begun.
The exceptional
cinematography - among the very best of ANY genre
movie - is years ahead of its time!
