When
a young woman - raise as a strict vegetarian - undergoes a carnivorous
hazing (which involves eating raw rabbit livers) at her university,
she has an immediate allergic reaction which then develops into an unbidden
taste for meat. Her craving becomes uncontrollable as she slips into
cannibalism during frenzied sex.
For
the past decade French horror has concentrated on dark themes dealing
with lust and body betrayal. This is a narrative that seems to have
begun with Claire Denis' TROUBLE
EVERY DAY in 2002, gaining momentum with IN
MY SKIN, INSIDE
and MARTYRS.
Interestingly, much of the new-wave of disturbing French gore mania
(including this film) is directed by a female.
