(983) SHADOWMAN (1975) [Nuits Rouges] Georges Franju
(983) SHADOWMAN (1975) [Nuits Rouges] Georges Franju

Final Theatrical Project for French director Georges Franju

Original French Title: NUITS ROUGES [Red Nights]
also known as L'HOMME SAN VISAGEAND [Man Without A Face]

director: Georges Franju
starring: Jacques Champreux · Gayle Hunnicott · Josephine Chaplin · Gert Frobe

Wealthy writer Baron de Borrego knows where the secret, legendary treasure of the Templar Monks is hidden. His unfaithful servant Albert has gambling debts and he would like to trade his master's information for cash. But Albert finds unexpected trouble when he attempts to make a deal with master criminal Shadowman.

Famed filmmaker Georges Franju got the greenlight for his production company to bring FANTOMAS to French television in 1975. Unfortunately, once into the deal, Georges realized that he couldn't make it work due to an exorbitant amount of money demanded by the owners of the Fantomas character. He kept the Templar story but rewrote his criminal superhero as Shadowman. That TV series ran on European TV and its success gave birth to this motion picture (which was culled mostly from television segments).

Georges Franju is a figure of immense importance to the history of French cinema, not primarily for his films (as exceptional as Eyes Without A Face and Judex may be) but for being the founder and guardian of the Cinematheque Française in 1937+, France's most famous and important film archive. SHADOWMAN would be his final theatrical project. Mr Franju died from a stroke at age 75 in November 1987.

A French film in English language; fullscreen format (4:3), uncut (88 minutes), DVD encoded for ALL REGION NTSC WORLD FORMAT; extras include selected theatrical trailers.
