One
day, an ordinary man in a small town realizes that he is living the
same day over and over again. Actually, he - and everybody around him
- were once human but their city was destroyed by an industrial accident
and their consciousness have been transferred into tiny robots. Their
memories get erased every night and are replaced by a new batch of advertisements
tested by space aliens.
This
was the debut project by Luigi Cozzi. At the time, he was managing Dario
Argento's Profundo Rosso bookstore in Rome and had become enamored
with American Science Fiction. After reading Frederik Pohl's Tunnel
Under the World, Luigi decided to make it into a movie. Encouraged
(and financed) by Argento, Cozzi began shooting sequences in his spare
time. The young man had a rudimentary understanding of cinema [having
assisted Argento on various projects, including the scripting of FIVE
DAYS OF MILAN] but he was more enthralled with the French New
Wave, especially films of Jean-Luc Goddard. As a result, this SciFi
cautionary tale of advertising-gone-wild is as bleak as it is experimental.
This film was followed a few years later by one of the great Italian
giallos, Cozzi's DARK
IS DEATH'S FRIEND.
