Although she is probably best known for her Mario Bava film MASK OF SATAN (or for L'ARMATA BRANCALEONE because of her nude scene), this film is generally considered Barbara Steel's best performance. Mario Caiano's rich photography adds an amazing luster to the movie, but it is Ms Steel who - in her dual good-and-evil roles - makes it unforgettable. She stars as a faithless wife who [with her lover] is tortured to death in a dungeon by her vengeful husband. The husband soon discovers that his rich wife had left her fortune to a mentally unbalanced sister (this time a blonde Steel). The husband decides to marry the sister-in-law with the sole intention of driving her mad so he can commit her to an asylum and claim the inheritance. But things don't go as planned.

This is a moody, disturbing Italian Gothic from director Caiano (also see EYE OF THE LABYRINTH) loosely based on an M R James ghost story Lost Hearts. This is the fully uncut version and the torture scenes are remarkably strong for their time.
