An
Ugly, Shocking Tale of Grim Hostility in the Wilderness
director: Gonzalo Suarez
starring: Ana Belen · Victor Manuel · Michael J Pollard · Maria Vico
A young
couple, Alicia and Diego, have just married. They are obviously happy.
The two decide to spend their honeymoon in a remote, wooded area. They
are totally alone, a situation that forces them to either grow closer
together or discover their inner hostilities. They begin to experience
odd occurrences that put them on edge. For example, one of their two
pet hamsters kills the other one. And the water facets in their trailer
stopped working. Alicia has the feeling that someone or something is
spying on them; this becomes more troubling when her wedding dress is
missing from the back seat of their car. The marriage is fracturing.
And then, when Alicia and Diego discover an ugly secret in a crumbling
home nearby, the unthinkable happens.
This
was a very unusual project for both Ana Belen and Victor Manuel, two Spanish
singers who decided to tackle this unconventional production after a couple
years of TV specials and pop music. Despite the ugly, anti-romance message
which permeates the film, the two young people fell in love and married
shortly after the shoot. They would make one more film together - the
following year (for the same director) - called Al Diablo Con Amor
[To Hell With Love]. It was a quirky, less-intense musical venture about
a couple stranded on Devil's Island. The film produced a very successful
soundtrack album.
For another
four decades, Ana and Victor would continue making music together (and
separately), while securing numerous awards including the prestigiousFotoframas
de Plata. Ann Belen would also continue starring in motion pictures,
concentrating on bizarre sexually-charged themes. For example, she made
the intensely erotic TURKISH
DELIGHT in 1994 for Vicente Aranda and, earlier, the taboo-breaking
beastialia film CRIATURE
(CREATURE) in 1977.
Some
genre fans are attracted to this film due to Michael J Pollard, the American
actor who became wildly popular for his role in Bonnie and Clyde.
He appearance here is odd indeed. While Mr Pollard does have an important
part, it is - by contrast - brief. His screen time is limited to the conclusion
where he stalks and attacks Alicia (Ana), forcing her to smash in his
head.
