Justine
is a nubile young virgin - the quintessential good girl - cast from
a French orphanage and thrust into a depraved world of prostitution,
predatory lesbians, a fugitive murderess, bondage, S&M, branding,
and one supremely sadistic monk. Meanwhile, her sister Juliette, is
a bad girl who is constantly rewarded for her naughty deeds. It's a
mean, perverse, twisted tale from the pen of the Marquis De Sade ["No
good deed will go unpunished"] emphasizing and celebrating the
corruption of innocence.
This
film (and EMILY
a few months earlier) received much notoriety in the British gossip
press because Koo Stark was engaged to Prince Andrew at the time. He
was publicly indignant, condemning both films and asking for them to
be banned. Instead, the relationship came to an end and Koo Stark missed
the opportunity to become the Duchess of York.
