Sophie
Marceau in Legendary Andrzej Zulawski's Actioner
director: Andrzej Zulawski
starring: Sophie Marceau · Francis Huster · Tcheky Karyo
· Christiane Jean · Jean-Marc Bory
After
a successful bank robbery, Micky hopes to retrieve his girlfriend Mary,
a woman who had been snatched by the gangster brothers Venin. On his
way to Paris, Micky meets a neurotic dreamer named Leon. Although everyone
considers Leon an Idiot, Micky is enamored with him and asks for his
assistance in Paris. The Idiot has no way of understanding Micky's plight
but is willing to follow him. They manage to get Mary; however, things
become complicated when the Idiot falls in love with her. The strange
love triangle forces raw emotions to surface and madness ensues.
Andrzej
Zulawski stamps his brand of maniac hysteria onto Fyodor Dostoevsky's
Idiot
and the result is something akin to a live-action Looney
Tunes extravaganza, complete with lyrical dialogue, a zingy pace
that leaves the audience exhausted and - of course - the beautiful Sophie
Marceau in her unclad glory. While [arguably] not his best film (that
would probably be Possession), this is quintessentia Zulawski;
and must-see cinema for the fans. Mr Zulawski died in February 2016
from cancer at age 75.
