Even
though Beat Takeshi Kitano started as a comedian, very few of his movies
have been comedies. Of course, he is best known for his gangster and
samurai films. Back in the mid '90s, he made an over-the-top (bad-taste)
invisible man comedy called
GETTING ANY LATELY?. Don't expect that kind of frenzied mayhem
here. This is a quieter, character-driven film telling the story of
a retired Yakuza, Ryuzo (Tatsuya Fuji), who reunites his old gang to
claim back their turf from the younger badguys now in control.
There
are eight aging gangsters - each with their own idiosyncrasies and talents
- who take on a corrupt Yakuza-owned corporation called Keihin United.
The CEO of that company is the self-absorbed Nishi and he truly does
deserve the grief inflicted upon him. Director Kitano also co-stars
as a similarly aging police detective who sternly chastises Ryuzo and
his clan ("The old way no longer apply in modern Japan") but
secretly is cheering them on.
