Massimo
Dallamano delivers the Chills in Demonic Possession thriller
Original Italian
Title: IL MEDAGLIONE INSANGUINATO [PERCHE?!]
also known as THE NIGHT CHILD
director: Massimo Dallamano
starring: Richard Johnson · Joanna Cassidy · Evelyne Stewart
· Edmund Purdom · Nicoletta Elmi
After
mother and nanny are both killed in a fire, documentary filmmaker Michael
Williams decides to take his daughter with him on a movie assignment
to Spoleto where he is investigating demonic paintings. While there,
he gives Nicole a titular medallion as a gift. Once the daughter places
it around her neck, she is possessed by the spirit of a dead child who
was a murderess.
This
film was obviously inspired by the International success of William
Friedkin's "Exorcist," but through creative direction
by Massimo Dallamano, it does manage to rise above the tired clichés
and pitfalls. By trade, Massimo was a cinematographer prior to taking
the director's position(best known for lensing Sergio Leone's FISTFUL
OF DOLLARS
and FOR
A FEW DOLLARS MORE). As a director, he only made a handful of
films (including VENUS
IN FURS, WHAT
HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE?, et al) before suddenly getting
killed in an auto accident at age 59 in November 1976.
Veteran
British actor
Richard Johnson starred in 140+ productions between 1950-2014. Fans
of cult movies probably remember him best for the mad doctor role in
Lucio Fulci's ZOMBIE
2 (Flesh Eating Zombies). Film historians always are quick to
mention that he was first choice to play James Bond in "Dr No"
but turned down the role because he didn't want to commit to a series.
Mr Johnson died after a short illness in June of 2015 at age 87.
