director: Juan Logar
starring: Juan Luis Galiardo · Emiliano Redondo · Jack
Taylor · Maria Jose Cantudo · Maria Vidar
This
is one of five motion pictures directed by Spanish filmmaker Juan Logar
between 1969-81. It is an excursion into 'Mondo' territory while delving
into themes of war, the Afterlife, religion and infidelity. The plot
deals with the turmoil of a young journalist correspondent who returns
home from a shooting assignment during the Viet Nam war. After a near-death
experience - complicated by an opium overdose - Juan becomes obsessed
with the frailties of the human psyche. Fixated on questions of mortality,
Juan interviews lots of people, both professionals and common folk.
Unsatisfied with the answers, he decides to witness an autopsy. That
experience helps Juan find inner peace and an understanding that he
is (as we all are) an essential component to the theocracy of the universe.
Meanwhile, the doctor who performs the autopsy (Jack Taylor) is also
moved by the experience and decides to confront his cheating wife.
Skeptics
insist that director Juan Logar (sometimes called Juan Logar Garcia)
is only interested in the shock value of his subject matter as he camouflages
true intent behind a series of lofty platitudes. Regardless,
it should be noted: the autopsy scenes are real and spliced into the
film for maximum impact. Filmmaker Logar seems personally obsessed
with graphic depiction of mondo-influenced gore. His previous film -
the seldom seen "Trasplantede Un Cerebro" [Brain Transplant]
(1970) - also uses real footage to tell its story.
