Based on the novels by Pierre Souvestre and Marcel Allain, this is the lavish action/adventure comedy that dominated the International market in the early Sixties. Though virtually unknown in the United States, Andre Hunebelle's epic film became the storyboard for the superhero genre.

Here is the story of Fantomas - a masked super criminal - who mocks the police as he pulls off one dastardly caper after another. Meanwhile, news reporter Fandor has written articles claiming Fantomas doesn't exist at all, but rather is the creation of the police to explain unsolved crimes. Naturally this infuriates Fantomas and he evens the score by disguising himself as both Fandor and the police commissioner for his next series of crimes.
