Jennifer Connelly plays Claire Hamilton, a young dancer who arrives in Budapest to attend a prestigious ballerina school. Before long, she begins to suspect that things aren't what they seem. In fact, Claire loses all connection with the real world when she is chosen to perform in a 'dark' rendition of Swan Lake, a version that doesn't follow the traditional narrative. In this revised performance - seemingly orchestrated by the devil himself - the force of Good does not triumph and young Claire is destined to be killed on stage.
