A
gruesome and notorious example of the "Nazi Death Camp" movies
produced - mostly - by the Italians in the mid 1970s, instigated by the
success of ILSA: SHE WOLF OF THE SS. Commandant Starker runs a women's
prison that serves as both a death camp and a bordello for Nazi soldiers
returning from the frontlines. Along with his demented subordinates and
a female Gestapo officer Alma (who feeds victims to her dogs), Starker
takes great pleasure in his atrocities. He is most proud of being able
to break the will of any prisoner and enters into a bet with Captain Alma
to turn an indignant prisoner named Lise Cohen into his slave.
Director Canevari (sometimes operating under
the alias Berwary Ross or D. Brownson) would helm 10 motions pictures
during Italy's Golden Period in the '60s and '70s. He is known for the
Spaghetti Westerns MATALO (1970) and DIE
FOR A DOLLAR IN TUCSON (1964) but he will always be remembered
for delivering this over-the-top Nazi atrocity film toward the end of
his career. Mr Canevari died from natural causes in October 2012 at age
85.
