Aldo
Lado's seldom seen film is based on the true story that made headlines
in the mid 1980s... the story of a relationship that had gone the limits:
A Japanese man who had turned his French girlfriend into sushi. It was
discovered - according to the arresting officers in France - he had eaten
various body parts as proof for their profound passion. This
project was a divergence for filmmaker Lado who had delivered numerous
state-of-the-art Euro thrillers including SHORT
NIGHT OF THE GLASS DOLLS and WHO
SAW HER DIE?. He had been attracted to the story and wrote the
script for producer Alessandro Signetto in 1988. In turn, the production
company gave him the green light to shoot the film.
The film
is set in Berlin where young Japanese Yuro falls in love with a self-absorbed
dancer Valerie. They become obsessed with each other, and the intensity
of their relationship crescendos into a sharing of each other's flesh.
Spoiler alert: It doesn't end well.
An
