The
Greatest World Cult Film You've Never Seen...
director:
Slobodan Sijan
starring: Tasko Nacic · Nikola Simic · Srdjan Saper ·
Rahela Ferari · Sonja Savic · Maria Baxa
Slobodan Sijan is
a Serbian filmmaker who graduated from Academy of Theatre and Film in
Belgrade. He began his career as a director in the mid-'70s. This film,
DAVITELJ PROTIV DAVITELJA (Serbian title), is generally
considered a cinematic tour de force and recognized as the most
important Cult film to have emerged from Yugoslavia. Its unique blend
of horror, music and humor is virtually unparalleled in World Cinema.
The performances are also amazing, especially that of Tasko Nacic - a
very popular Yugoslavian comic - as the film's major strangler Peter Mitic.
What makes a city
a major world-class metropolis? The filmmaker claims that happens when
it gets its first serial killer. Such an event did not happen in Belgrade
until the late '70s when flower peddler Peter Mitic began strangling women.
Peter lives with his cruel mother in a gothic apartment. He pounds the
pavement selling his mother's flowers and embraces the motto "Those
who don't like carnations don't deserve to live!." His victims are
the young women who refuse to buy his flowers and humiliate him in public.
Meanwhile, a struggling (and deeply disturbed) rock star named Spiro becomes
telepathically connected with the killer. This young singer writes a song
honoring the Strangler as a 'Belgrade hero' and the two find themselves
on a collision course which ends in death and destruction.
