Leopold von Sacher-Masoch
wrote the S&M novel "Venus in Furs" in 1870; it's controversial
success led to his namesake (Masoch) becoming the accepted term
for "Masochism" throughout the world. In late 2013, famed director
Roman Polanski released his version of VENUS
IN FUR causing much interest in the two films that came previously,
this one and Massimo Dallamano's 1968 VENUS
IN FURS.
Jess Franco is well
known to fans of Cult Cinema, amassing a collection of well over 100 films
during his career. This one - with its dreamy psychedelic production -
is generally considered one of his very best.
Franco preferred to call it BLACK ANGEL, but the distribution company
changed to name to "Venus In Furs" to cash in on the success
of Massimo Dallamano's VENUS
IN FURS the previous year. The male star, James Darren, is best known
as the lead of the ABC Television show "Time Tunnel" but he's
also the '60s pop singer of 'Goodbye Cruel World' and 'Her Royal Majesty'
fame.
This film tells the story of a jazz trumpet player (patterned after Chet
Baker) who finds the naked mutilated body of Wanda washed ashore on a
Turkish beach. Seemingly she had been the victim of a cruel orgy at an
isolated mansion. The musician tries to escape his obsession with the
dead girl by accepting a tour in Rio where he continues to be plagued
by her 'ghost.'
A French/British
co-production; widescreen, totally uncut version (86 min.), in English
language with optional Greek subtitles, DVD encoded for ALL REGION NTSC,
playable on any American machine. Extras include interview with actress
Maria Rohm, gallery and trailers.
