KAIDAN KAGAMI
GAFUCHI (Ghosts of Kagami Pond) is a traditional Japanese ghost
legend that has been made into numerous motion picture productions over
the years. This 1959 version from legendary Japanese director Masaki Mouri
is - along with Nobuo Nakagawa’s ‘57 film GHOST
STORY OF KAGAMI - considered one of the best renditions.
Here is the story of an unscrupulous businessman and his mistress who
systematically cheat the local folks. After he sells an inferior kimono
to a bride - causing it to tear and unravel during the ceremony - she
is so ashamed that she drowns herself in the Kagami Swamp... but not before
leveling a curse the merchant and his haberdashery. The ghost of the bride
rises up against the greedy couple to exact vengeance.
