The
Only Gore Mummy Movie (to Date) Lives up the the DAWN Title
director:
Frank Agrama with Armand Weston and Antonio Margheriti
starring: Brenda King · George Peck · Joan Levy ·
Barry Sattels · John Salvo · Diane Beatty
The only
obvious thing about this film is they were trying to capitalize on the
success of Geroge Romero's DAWN
OF THE DEAD ('79). The film saw a theatrical release in the summer
of 1980 and managed to satisfy the audience's craving for zombie gore.
Much less is known about the actual pedigree of the film: Frank Agrama
is credited as the director, but the project was initially helmed by Armando
Weston who was fired by producer Agrama shortly after the film got rolling.
At some point, Agrama realized that his knowledge of Gore FX was lacking
and he brought Italian maestro Antonio Margheriti into the mix. The result
is surprisingly good and full of gut-munching horrors.
While
on a shoot in Egypt, group of NYC fashion models disturb the tomb of a
mummy and revive an ancient curse. Along with the mummy rising, slaves
who were buried in the desert thousands of years before, also rise, with
a craving for human flesh.
