Stephen Chow
continues to operate at the top of his game (after the runaway success
of both SHAOLIN
SOCCER and KUNG
FU HUSTLE). Now, he emerges with a funny, tragic, bittersweet children's
SciFi thriller that may - simply - be the best kid's movie ever made.
The story
(beware of spoilers) deals with a low-income dad and son. Chow
can't afford to give his kid a popular new toy, so he finds an odd rubber
ball in a dumpster and passes it on. Somehow, the thing is possessed by
an extraterrestrial (!) and comes to life as a stuffed dog [named CJ7]
with the ability to regenerate dying objects (for example, it can turn
a rotting apple into a healthy one). A few days later, dad dies (!!) in
an accident at a construction site; the kid is overcome with sorrow and
prays for a miracle. The ET brings father back to life but dies in the
process. Life resumes to normal in the household until a spaceship lands....
