Around the
same time as director Ishii explored S&M with his notorious JOYS
OF TORTURE films, he dabbled in the horror genre. This ghost thriller
from 1970 is one of his most famous projects. It's the story of a tattooed
swordsman who becomes hopelessly paranoid [cursed·] after she kills the
Aozora Yakuza boss and accidentally blinds his daughter (Meiko Kaji from
LADY
SNOWBLOOD and the SASORI
prison movies). The plot allows the director to incorporate many excessive
scenes of sex and bloodshed (for example, a demented hunchback skins women
for their tattoos).
