A salary-man
is dispatched to a remote area of China to track down a rumored lode of
high-quality jade. Accompanied by a small group of explorers (including
a grizzled yazuka), they have trouble finding the jade, but instead stumble
upon a tribe of bird people.
BIRD PEOPLE IN CHINA may be director Miike's fantasy masterpiece. "It's
a poem embracing both modern life and nature, a warning sent out to a
dehumanized Japanese society. ·Bird People once again raises the familiar
ISSUE of inevitability for the yakuza. As both Wada and Ujiee fail at
flying, Wada suggests that 'maybe one has to stop breathing to succeed.'
This remains an interesting variation of the Dead or Alive 2 axiom that
man has to die to be completely free."
