This is a
fully unedited version of Ralph Nelson's notorious brutal, blood-soaked,
western (still, after 30 years, unavailable uncut in the United States).
It was originally intended as a caustic, anti Viet Nam War statement (damned
by many "serious" critics at the time for that very reason),
but the movie still delivers an amazing impact today. After a cavalry
unit is massacred by Cheyenne Indians, only two survivors remain·
Honus (Straus), a naive private devoted to his military duty, and Cresta
(Bergen), a young woman who had lived with the Cheyenne two years and
whose sympathies aren't particularly on the side of the U.S. government.
They join together in an attempt to safely reach the cavalry's fort. During
the journey, Honus is torn between a growing affection for Cresta, and
his disgust for her anti-American beliefs. When they finally reach the
cavalry unit, it is on the eve of a major attack against a peaceful Cheyenne
village. Honus soon learns the truth about American military aggression.
